Description
Silver and vermeil chalice and paten, with a stepped foot chiselled with twisted godrons and engraved with the inscription “CHAPEL OF LA DENISIERE CONSECRATED ON 28 OCTOBER 1805 BY MGR DE PIDOLL, BISHOP OF LE MANS - surmounted by the coat of arms of the de BLANCHARDON family”. The stem is baluster-shaped, decorated with interlacing patterns supporting a vermeil chalice held in place by alternating godrons and cascading piastres. Vermeil paten engraved on the reverse with “IHS”. 18th century. Paris hallmarks (charge and discharge, medium) (1768–1774, tax farmer Julien Alaterre), common house mark for the year 1769. Master goldsmith Claude-Pierre DEVILLE, admitted to the guild in 1769. H. 26 cm, diameter of the paten: 14.5 cm, total weight: 720 g. Note: Monsignor Johann Michael Josef von PIDOLL (1734–1819), installed as Bishop of Le Mans on 11 July 1802 and mentioned in Nepveu de La MANOUILLERE, *Journal d’un chanoine du Mans*, S GRANGER – B. HUBERT - M. TARONI, Rennes, Presses Universitaires de Rennes, 2013, no. 261: “On 28 October 1805, the Bishop of Le Mans blessed or consecrated the chapel at La Denisière belonging to Mr de BLANCHARDON”.
