Description
ALAMANNI (Luigi).
[Gyrone il cortese.] [Paris], [Regnault and Claude Chaudière], [1548]. In-4, 180 folios, unbound. The 8 introductory leaves, including the title page, are missing. Slight scattered foxing; the margins of the last few folios are slightly gnawed.
A rare, complete first edition of this verse adaptation of the Arthurian prose novel ‘Gyron le Courtois’ (printed c. 1503), commissioned by François I from his Italian poet to serve as a tool of French political propaganda in Italy. The poem, which remained popular until the 16th century and was compared to “Amadis”, saw five partial editions between 1501 and 1534. In a lengthy preface addressed to Henry II, Alamanni once again seeks royal support and, for the benefit of a sovereign who was a lover of chivalry and tournaments, traces the origins of these practices as well as the institution of the knights-errant of the Round Table. The edition was reprinted in 1549 in Venice by Comin da Trino. (Brunet I, 126 “A fine edition, printed under the author’s supervision”; Renouard 78.)
