Description
ALAMANNI (Luigi).
Tuscan Works by Luigi Alamanni for the Most Christian King Francis I. Venice, published by the heirs of Luca Antonio Junta, 1542. In-8, 295–[7] pp. Havana morocco, spine ribbed and embossed, framed with gilt and blind-stamped bands with a central gilt fleur-de-lis on the covers, edges painted blue (antique Venetian binding).
A fine edition of the works of the poet Luigi Alamanni (1495–1556), an opponent of the Medici, who was exiled to France and entered the service of Francis I, to whom the work is dedicated.
A fine engraved bookseller’s mark on the title page and a full-page mark in the colophon. Gnawing and wormholes on the spine (with a significant loss at the tail), on the endpapers and in the inner margins of the first leaves and endpapers.
An interesting early bookplate: ‘Di Lionardo d’Alamanno da filiis [?] fiorentino’, possibly a relative of the author. A blue ink stamp on the title page reading ‘Bibl. Gust. C. Galletti. Flor.” (Gustavo Camillo Galletti (1805–1868), Florentine publisher and bibliophile). Stamp bearing the monogram HL.
