LAURENT JUSTINIEN (Saint). The Works and Most Pious Life of Saint Lawrence Justinian, Protopatriarch of Venice; with a double index, revised by Castigatius. [Paris], Josse Bade, 1524. Large quarto comprising [8]–CCCCCXXVII folios. Brown calfskin, cold-stamped with clasps. Contemporary binding, worn with loss, extensively restored (re-cased). A rare and fine edition of the works of Saint Laurent Justinien (Lorenzo Giustiniani) (1380–1456), Bishop of Castello and first Patriarch of Venice; a great reformer, to whom we owe important mystical works. Title printed in black and red within a beautiful, ornate Renaissance frame and bearing the fine mark of the printer-bookseller and great humanist Josse Bade (c. 1462–1535). After studying in Ghent and Leuven, he spent time and studied in Italy before taking up a teaching post in Valence, then from 1492 to 1498 in Lyon, where he worked as a proofreader for Jean Trechsel, whose daughter-in-law he married. He settled in Paris in 1499, where he opened his own printing workshop in 1503. A humanist and professor of literature at the university; author of several works and intellectual editor of over 110 texts. Father of the printer and bookseller Conrad Bade and father-in-law of the printers and booksellers Robert I Estienne, Jean de Roigny, Michel de Vascosan and Jacques I Du Puis. (source: data.bnf.)
