Description
SARTORIUS (Johannes). Adagiorvm chiliades tres, which Johannes Sartorius has translated into the Batavian language with great skill and elegance, and elucidated with a brief and clear commentary. Antwerp, Johann Loë, 1561. In-8, 324–[27] ff. Brown calfskin, ribbed spine (contemporary binding). Binding very worn, with significant losses to the spine. Interior in good condition, good margins. A humanist collection of ancient aphorisms and proverbs, by Johannes Sartorius, inspired by Erasmus’s *Adagia*. This edition, published in Antwerp in 1561, brings together some three thousand Greek and Latin maxims translated into Dutch by Johannes Sartorius, accompanied by brief explanations and commentaries intended to elucidate their moral, linguistic and literary meaning. The work is part of the educational tradition of the Renaissance, serving as a language textbook, an anthology of classical culture and a tool for humanist teaching.
