PLUTARCH. The Lives of the Noble Men […] Paris, Barbin, 1694. In-4, havana calfskin, decorated ribbed spine, title label, gilded coat of arms on the cover (contemporary binding). Binding worn, cap ends missing, joints split, stains… First edition, in a single volume, of André Dacier’s translation of Plutarch’s Lives of Illustrious Men, modelled on the 16th-century translation by Jacques Amyot. This editorial project was intended to gauge public reception prior to the complete edition, which would not ultimately appear until 1721. This first edition contains the following six biographies: Theseus, Romulus, Lycurgus, Numa Pompilius, Solon and Publicola, each accompanied by Dacier’s remarks and commentary. Blank spaces were left to accommodate future engraved portraits and initial letters. Featuring the gilded superlibris on the cover of the BIBLIOTHEQUE DE CITEAUX, with its handwritten ex-libris on the title page.
