Description
Alps – BOURRIT (Marc Théodore). A New Description of the Glacial Valleys and High Mountains Forming the Pennine and Rhaetian Alps. Geneva, Paul Barde, 1783. 2 volumes in-8, in havana calfskin, smooth decorated spine, title label and volume number in red and green wax, gilt scrolls framing the covers (light later binding, c. 1800). Caps and corners worn, scuffed. First edition of this rare work by the Swiss Marc-Théodore Bourrit (1739–1819), writer, artist, traveller, and above all one of the forefathers of mountaineering, alongside Horace-Bénédict de Saussure and Jean André Deluc. Dedicated to King Louis XVI, it is illustrated with a fold-out map of the Alpine range, eight etchings by Moitte based on the author’s drawings, and wood-engraved vignettes and headpieces. The plates outside the main text depict the Chermotane glaciers, a view of the Rhône in Valais, Lake Kandel-Steig, the Rhône Glacier, the Devil’s Bridge, the Grindelwald Glacier, Lake Chède and Mont Blanc. A very fine copy apart from the defects in the bindings.
