BELLERIVE (Jules-Alexis-Bernard de). An Account of a Journey by the Chevalier de Bellerive from Spain to Bender, and of his Stay at the Camp of the King of Sweden. Paris, at the shop of the widow Barbin, and published by Pierre Huet and Pierre Prault, 1713. 2 parts (continuous pagination) in one in-12 volume of 244–[4] pp., brown sheepskin, decorated ribbed spine (contemporary binding). Binding worn, caps missing, corners blunt. A rare first edition, with a separate title for the second part: ‘On the Riches, Power and Armies of the Grand Lord, the Janissaries, Spahis & Arabs; on the Marriage Customs of the Turks, their Meals, Dances & Other Amusements’. Scattered foxing. Ex-libris of Rob. de Billy. The illegitimate son of the Duke of Vendôme and a descendant of Henry IV, the Chevalier de Bellerive (c. 1690–1770) initially pursued a military career in Spain before travelling to the East, in particular to Constantinople and then to Bender (in present-day Moldova, then under Turkish control), to meet Charles XII of Sweden, who had taken refuge there following his failed military campaign against Russia. Despite his background and a few historical publications, he lived in poverty and met a tragic end, being imprisoned for life after being accused of criticising Louis XV.
