The Middle East – SURIUS (Father Bernardin). The Pious Pilgrim, or Journey to Jerusalem, divided into three books, containing a topographical description of various kingdoms, countries, cities and foreign nations, namely the fourteen Eastern religions, their customs and dispositions, both in matters of religion and civil conduct. Brussels, François Foppens, 1666. In-4, [30]-596-[8] pp., old cream vellum (soiled), red title label added later. Text pages slightly browned. Third edition (the second in French), published two years after the first and illustrated with an engraved frontispiece title page, a portrait of the author (separate from the text), a fold-out map of Palestine and an illustration on the title page depicting the tomb of Muhammad. An interesting account of the travels of Surius, a Dutch pilgrim and president of the Holy Sepulchre, who spent three years in the Holy Land as commissioner of the Holy Land. The work traces his itinerary through Italy and the islands of Malta, Crete and Cyprus, before offering a remarkable description of the Levant and the Holy Places. Divided into three parts, the text discusses Eastern religious practices and the customs and traditions of the inhabitants; it contains observations on the Qur’an and is accompanied by exhortations intended for pilgrims travelling to the Holy Land.
