Description
[POLLNITZ (Charles Louis, Baron de)]. Amusements at the Spas of Aachen. A useful work for those who are going there to take the baths, or who are in the habit of using its waters. Enriched with engravings depicting views and perspectives of this city, its baths and fountains, churches and public buildings. Amsterdam, Mortier, 1736. 3 vols. in-12, marbled calfskin, spine with ornate raised bands, title and volume number labels in brown marbled paper, gilt coat of arms centred on the flat sides, red edges (contemporary binding). Ex-libris C.J.L. Coquereau. First edition illustrated with a frontispiece, a vignette, 22 (out of 23) separate plates (some fold-out), as well as figures within the text. Plate no. 3 is missing. A curious work recounting spa stays in the 18th century. It describes the various treatments and ablutions in specialised establishments, social gatherings, adventures, flirtations, visits and the entertainments in which people readily took part. Some minor wear. A fine copy bearing the coat of arms of Louise-Diane-François de Clermont-Gallerande (1711–1784), Duchess of Brancas, lady-in-waiting to the Daughters of France (1747) and lady-in-waiting to the Dauphine (1750–1762). Her library comprised some 4,000 carefully selected and beautifully bound volumes, many of which were on natural history.
