Description
BETSKOY (Ivan Ivanovich). The Plans and Statutes of the various institutions established by Her Imperial Majesty Catherine II for the education of young people and the general welfare of her Empire. Written in Russian by Mr Betsky and translated into French from the originals by Mr Clerc. Amsterdam, Marc-Michel Rey, 1775. 2 quarto volumes of [3] folios (excluding the half-title), 160-42-[2] pp., frontispiece, 3 folding plans and one folding table, [2] folios. (half-title and title page), 160 pp., frontispiece, 2 plates and 3 tables, bound in one volume in brown half-maroquin, with a decorated ribbed spine (later imitation binding). 22 copper-engraved vignettes in-t. (12+10). The illustrations, by Grigory Fedorovich SREBRENITZY (1741–1779), Stepan PANINE (1739–1775) and Dmitri Fedorovich GUERASSIMOV (1739–1784), are largely taken from other works published previously and also relating to education (“Statutes for the Education of Two Hundred Young Ladies of Good Birth” 1768, ‘General Plan of the Moscow House of Education’ 1767, ‘Foundation of the House of Education’ 1763). This copy is incomplete, with several blank spaces where illustrations were never engraved. Ivan Ivanovich Betskoi (Ива́н Ива́нович Бе́цкой) (1704–1795) presided over the Imperial Academy of Arts from 1764 to 1794 and is best known for his reform of education in Russia. He was greatly influenced by the Encyclopédistes and, in turn, was admired by Diderot for his work.
