[MÉRIMÉE (Prosper)]. Plays by Clara Gazul, a Spanish actress. Paris, Sautelet, 1825. In-8, [2] ff. ix–337–[2] pp. Red long-grain morocco, smooth spine finely decorated, gilt title, double gilt line framing the covers, decorated edges, triple gilt line framing the interior (see Champs). First edition of Mérimée’s first work. It includes the note on Clara Gazul, signed by Joseph l’Estrange, and the five plays by the fictional actress. One of the few copies bearing the half-title ‘Théâtre de Clara Gazul’; most copies bear the inscription ‘Collection des théâtres étrangers’. A very fine copy in a perfect binding by Champs. (Vicaire V, 700.)
