Description
[NICOLE (Pierre)]. Les Imaginaires, or Letters on Imaginary Heresy, Volume I. Containing the first ten. By the Sieur de Damvilliers. – Les Visionnaires, or Part Two of the Letters on Imaginary Heresy, containing the last eight. Liège, Adolphe Beyers, 1667. 2 volumes, small 12mo, [14] ff., 430 pp., 495 pp. Black Jansenist morocco, spine with five raised bands, title, publisher and date in gold, gilt edges, interior lace (Capé). In a later slipcase. “There is no doubt whatsoever as to the provenance of these two volumes, whatever Brunet may say. One recognises at first glance Daniel Elzevier’s typefaces, globe and fleurons, and the work is listed with an asterisk in the 1681 catalogue. This collection comprises eighteen ‘short letters’ in the style of the ‘Provinciales’, ‘and quite worthy of following in their footsteps from a distance’, as Sainte-Beuve put it (‘Port-Royal’, vol. IV, p. 322). The last eight, entitled ‘Les Visionnaires’, are directed specifically against Desmarets de Saint-Sorlin, author of a comedy of that name (see no. 651). It is known that Monsieur de Damvilliers is the pseudonym of P. Nicole.” Willems (no. 1377). Ex-libris of P. Grandsire. Ex-libris stamp of a religious congregation on the second volume.
