Description
VERLAINE (Paul). Sagesse. Brussels, Société générale de librairie catholique, 1881. In-8, brown percaline Bradel binding, title label running the length of the spine. First edition, printed in a run of approximately 500 copies, all on vellum, of this important collection published at the author’s own expense, of which (according to Verlaine himself) only about ten copies were sold when it first appeared in bookshops. ""A very rare work printed in an edition of 600 copies, including 100 author’s copies which Vanier bought back at a pittance and put back on sale under a blank label bearing his own name"" Carteret. Complete with the first blank leaf, bearing an E.A.S. by the author (slightly faded). Missing the final blank leaf. A few very slight foxing spots. A fine copy in contemporary binding. (Vicaire VII, 992; Carteret II, 420.)
