Description
LA FONTAINE (Jean de). Tales and Short Stories in Verse. Paris, Plassan and Chevalier, 1792. 2 vols. in-8, in pale calfskin, smooth, decorated spines, title and volume number labels in red morocco, triple gilt fillet framing the covers, gilt edges (contemporary binding). A fine edition of the complete reprint of the ‘Fermiers Généraux’, containing the two portraits (La Fontaine and Eisen), 86 illustrations by Eisen (compared with the 80 announced by Cohen), vignettes and end-piece engravings by Choffard, the last of which features his portrait. A tear in the first portrait (at the bottom) has been restored without any loss of material. “The engravings drawn by Eisen express, without obscenity, the most piquant moments of the tales: in several one recognises the touch of Rubens, in others that of Tenière (sic), and in most that of the Graces” – prospectus written by Plassan for this 1792 edition. “Whilst Choffard’s watermarks are somewhat worn here, the figures, printed at the time—of which 1,200 copies remained in stock—are as fine as those in the 1762 copies.” Cohen. A fine copy in an elegant contemporary binding. (Cohen, 569–570 and 573; Rochambeau, p. 531, no. 101.)
