Description
LA FONTAINE (Jean de). Tales and Short Stories in Verse. Paris, Printed by P. Didot the Elder, 1795. 2 volumes in-12, black morocco, five-ribbed spine, title and volume number in gold, fine gold medallion in the centre of the covers, gilt edges on marbled paper, interior lace (late 19th-century binding). A lovely edition containing the same tales as the ‘Fermiers généraux’ edition, illustrated with a portrait of La Fontaine in a medallion at the head of his biographical note. A very fine copy, here enhanced by the two portraits of La Fontaine and Eisen engraved by Ficquet after H. Rigaud and Vispré, and the 80 illustrations by Eisen for the Fermiers généraux plus two rejected illustrations: *The Prayer of Saint Julian* and *The Painting*. (Rochambeau, p. 532, no. 103, which mentions another set of 75 vignettes by Desenne, Dugoure, Chasselat, etc., frequently added to this edition.)
