Description
LA FONTAINE (Jean de). Tales and Short Stories in Verse. Paris, Tourneisen, 1808. 2 volumes, in-8, in light-coloured half-calf, spine finely ribbed and decorated, title and volume number gilded, marbled edges (binding slightly later, circa 1820, in the style of Thouvenin). A reprint of the 83 plates, without the borders found in the Fermiers généraux edition. These plates were very delicately coloured at the time, adding to the charm of an edition that is, moreover, very well printed. The plate for the short story ‘Le bât’ (Volume 2, page 205), which was missing from the copy, has been reattached to a tab and happens to be from the first printing (1762) with the border. It features an engraved title page with a medallion portrait of La Fontaine. “This edition is none other than the 1796 Didot edition, which was revamped by engraving new titles in the name of Tourneisen and dating it 1808.” Rochambeau, p. 536, no. 117.
