Description
LA FONTAINE (Jean de). Tales and Short Stories in Verse. Illustrated with engravings by Honoré Fragonard, Monnet, Touzé and Milius, based on the original drawings by Le Rat, Milius, Mongin and R. de Los Rios. Revised edition, with an introductory note by Anatole de Montaiglon. Paris, P. Rouquette, 1883. 2 volumes in-4, Bradel binding in blue percaline, with red title label and volume number, covers preserved. The illustrations comprise two portraits (La Fontaine and Fragonard), two title finials, 69 hors-texte plates by Fragonard (57), Touzé (5), Monnet (2) (all taken from the 1795 edition) and by Milius (5 new plates), and 61 end-piece illustrations, a new print run from Boily’s copper plates for the 1764 edition. ""In 1880, Rouquette had published the 57 prints by Fragonard intended for Didot’s 1795 quarto edition, in the size of the original drawings belonging to Mr Paillet, but he had not included any text; to adapt them for the present edition, he had them reduced to in-8° format.” Rochambeau, p. 555, no. 180. Copy no. 583 (following 400 copies of the deluxe edition), on vellum, featuring a double set of etchings (on vellum and laid paper). A very fine copy.
