In-4, in light-coloured grosgrain morocco, plain spine, author’s name and title in gold lettering, pale green morocco lining with gold fillet work at the corners, pale green silk endpapers, gilt head, illustrated cover and spine preserved, in a half-morocco case in blond grosgrain with flaps and a slipcase with flaps. 54 colour illustrations in the text by Clarence Gagnon. Print run of 2,000 copies; no. 1,109 of 1,900 on white Rives paper in the original format. A fine copy in an attractive, unsigned lined binding (though bearing the following inscription in gold lettering on the second endpaper: ‘To my dear wife R.D.’) of this sought-after edition, prized for Gagnon’s exceptional artwork. In the early 1930s, Clarence Gagnon (1881–1942) was entrusted with the major project of illustrating Louis Hémon’s novel, an iconic work of French-speaking Canada. The production of the 54 beautiful gouaches adorning the book spanned more than five years, and Gagnon’s work went on to influence Canadian art for many years to come.
