MORAND (Paul).
Siam. Illustrated with 18th-century Siamese miniatures. Paris: Les Aldes, undated. In-4, honey-coloured morocco, spine with four decorated raised bands, leather panels on the covers and spine incised and painted with Siamese motifs, gilt head, interior framing of double gilt lines and mosaic fleurons, dominoté paper endpapers and lining, original illustrated cover preserved, in a slipcase with flaps (E. Berthet).
Beautiful 18th-century Siamese miniatures (the originals of which are held at the Vajinara Library in Bangkok and in a few private collections in the same city) reproduced by stencil within the text and as full-page illustrations: 2 cover vignettes, frontispiece, title vignette, 7 headpieces, 8 initials, 3 title-pages. The colouring of the illustrations was carried out by the Nervet art workshops.
Printed in a run of 97 copies; no. 71 of 90 on old Dutch laid paper from the Van Gelder paper mills.
A very fine copy. Rare. (The usual watermarks appear opposite the illustrations.)
‘Les Aldes’ was André Malraux’s publishing house in the 1930s, later taken over by Grasset.
