Description
SÉGUY (Émile-Allain).
Insects. 20 phototype plates, coloured using a stencil, depicting 80 insects and 16 decorative compositions. Paris, Duchartre and van Buggenhoudt, [1929]. Folio in loose sheets, with a colour-illustrated cardboard folder fastened with laces.
[2] folios of text and 20 very fine stencil-coloured plates, of which 16 depict 80 identified insect species and 4 feature 16 decorative motifs inspired by the shapes and colours of insects.
Little is known about the author, a prolific graphic artist active in Paris during the first quarter of the 20th century. He produced numerous portfolios of plates and motifs inspired by nature and intended for artists and interior designers. His mastery of drawing and colouring is combined with great entomological precision (each species presented is identified). The last four plates, which feature decorative motifs based on the shapes and colours of insects, are perfectly representative of the Art Nouveau style.
Very slight soiling on the cover, very small foxing spots on one plate. A fine copy, enhanced by an ‘E.A.S.’ (Artist’s Proof) by the artist to Georges Marindaz.
