Description
STAMPFLI (Pierre). The Calvary. Text taken from the Bible by J. F. OSTERVALD. Illustrations and text hand-engraved by P. Stampfli. Paris, [published by the artist], 1948. In-4 in folio, printed cover with inlay. 19 full-page woodcuts in colour. Very limited edition of only 25 copies; no. 12 signed by the artist with his first name. The Swiss painter (1916–1975) Pierre Stämpfli initially trained at the Technicum in Biel (1933–1936) before continuing his studies in Paris at the École des Arts Décoratifs, the École des Beaux-Arts and in the Fougerat and Rapin studios. Forced by the war to return to Switzerland with his wife, he settled in Biel in 1940, where he supported himself with odd jobs whilst devoting himself to painting. In 1946, he returned to Paris to further his skills in printmaking at Lacourière’s studio. On his return to Switzerland in 1950, he settled permanently in Biel, though he continued to travel, notably to Paris, Spain and Morocco.
