Charpentier, 1883. 2 vols. in-4, green morocco, ribbed spine decorated with triple gilt fillets, five gilt fillets framing the covers, double gilt fillet on the edges, wide gilt inner border, gilt capitals, covers preserved, in slipcases with flaps (R. Raparlier). One slipcase reinforced, the other broken. Ex-libris of H. Boekenoogen. The illustrations comprise two portraits accompanying the titles (Albert & Mlle de Maupin) etched by Champollion after Louis Leloir, 1 portrait of Théophile Gautier engraved by Burney after Celestin Nanteuil, 1 frontispiece title page, 18 large compositions by Toudouze etched by Champollion (including 2 variants for Chapter XII). Printed in an edition of 500 copies; no. 49 of 150 on extra-fine Japanese paper, containing all the illustrations in two states (before and with the letter), here enhanced with an additional engraving by Jeanniot and Boulard for the first chapter, also in two states (the same applies to Conquet).
