Journal des Dames et des Modes. Complete collection of 79 issues. Paris, at the offices of the Journal des Dames, 1912–1914. 78 issues bound in 4 in-8 volumes in blue half-calf, ribbed spines, title, volume number and date in gold, gilt heads, double blind-stamped line on the covers, original covers retained, in a matching slipcase. Spines very slightly sun-faded. A very complete collection of this sumptuous periodical founded by Tommaso Antongini, secretary to Gabriele d’Annunzio, and the journalist Jacques de Nouvion, offering a magnificent overview of French fashion, with original texts by Anatole France, Henri Lavedan, Maurice Donnay, Robert de Montesquiou, Fernand Vandérem, the Countess of Noailles, Jean Cocteau, Henri Barbusse, etc. The illustrations, also complete, consist of 186 plates (nos. 1–184 + 2 unnumbered plates), finely engraved and richly stencil-coloured by BARBIER, MARTIN, BRUNELLESCHI, WEGENER, BAKST, BOUTET DE MONVEL, DRIAN, Van Brock, Broders, Gose, Lemaire, Lhuer, etc. (Excluding the supplements/advertisements in folio format (4 pp. for each issue).) *Le Journal des Dames et des Modes* was a luxury magazine for an exclusive readership, published from 1 June 1912 to 1 August 1914, when it was interrupted by the war. Only 1,279 copies were printed. This is one of the 1,250 printed on Holland paper (no. 923). (Colas, 1567; Hiller, p. 486). Volume I (1 June to 20 December 1912): viii, 168 pp., 43 stencil plates + 1 facsimile plate of issue No. 30 of the *Journal des Dames et des Modes* dated 31 May 1812; Volume II (1 January to 20 June 1913): pp. 169–312, plates 44–93 + 1 unnumbered plate (“Le Choix difficile” by Ch. Martin); Volume III (1 July to 20 December 1913): 144 pp., plates 94 to 129; Volume IV (1 January to 20 July 1914): 152–24 pp., plates 130 to 182 + 1 unnumbered (“La Folie du Jour” by G. Barbier). Spines slightly sun-faded; traces of brown bookmarks on plate 26 and opposite, plate 68 and opposite, plate 108 and opposite, and plate 154 and opposite. A very fine copy, complete, attractively bound and perfectly preserved, representing this rare collection from the finest fashion magazine of the Art Deco period, which had a much more limited circulation than the *Gazette du Bon Ton*. The artists’ delicate and elegant illustrations are brought to life by the quality of the engraving and the subtle yet vibrant colours.
