Description
[LOUIS XIV].
The Dauphin’s Carrousel, held at Versailles on [28] May. To be sold at Versailles on the day of the Carrousel; and available in Paris from the Widow Blageart, 1686.
Small quarto, [4] folios, 72–63 pp. Marbled brown sheepskin, decorated ribbed spine (contemporary binding). Top cap torn off, small loss to the bottom cap, worn corners, some scuffing.
First edition of this rare little festive book, believed to have been published by Donneau de Visé (1638–1710), founder of the *Mercure galant* (1672–1832), as a ‘programme’ for the festivities. The work begins with a detailed historical account of the carousels and continues with a list of the prestigious participants, accompanied by numerous details of their attire; the second and final part contains madrigals, in verse, in their honour. The date left blank on the title page has been filled in by hand as 28 May in the copy held at the BnF. (Absent from Ruggieri.)
A few handwritten corrections in ink of the period. Underlined in pencil in places. Delicate verse borders in the lower margin of the first leaves. A gap in the pagination, with no pages missing, between pp. 44 and 49. Without the fold-out plate, which is often missing. Handwritten bookplate of the Marquis de La Min[?].
