LULLY (Jean-Baptiste) & COLASSE (Pascal). Achille et Polixene, a tragedy, the prologue and the last four acts of which were set to music by P. Colasse, Master of Music to the King’s Chapel, and the first act by the late Mre de Lully, Counsellor and Secretary to the King and Superintendent of Music in His Majesty’s Chamber. Paris, Christophe Ballard, 1687. Large quarto, [4]-xxxviii-316 pp. Havana sheepskin, decorated ribbed spine (contemporary binding). Binding worn, cap ends torn off, leather missing from the spine, corners blunt. Angular wormholes on the final leaves. First edition of the full score of this musical tragedy, begun by Jean-Baptiste Lully (for the overture and Act I) and completed by Pascal Colasse, Lully having died on 22 March 1687. The libretto is by Jean Galbert de Campistron, playwright and member of the Académie Française in 1701 (1656–1723), based on Virgil’s *Aeneid*. With handwritten signatures by Colasse and Ballard in brown ink at the end of the prologue. Handwritten bookplate of Mademoiselle [?] (name crossed out, Bonnin? Or Bouedon??). Small bookplate bearing a coat of arms on the inside front cover. Provenance: sale of the collection of Mme de Chambure, Pierre Bérès, 25 March 1997.
