Description
GIRTIN (Thomas).
A Selection of Twenty of the Most Picturesque Views in Paris. London, M. A. & John Girtin, 1803. Large Italian-style in-plano, 47 x 65 cm, brown half-basane with corners, plain spine with decoration (contemporary binding). Binding damaged, front cover detached.
A rare and beautiful set comprising a large title page, a dedication leaf and 20 plates drawn and engraved by Thomas Girtin and printed in aquatint by F. C. Lewis (14), Harraden (3), Pickett (2) and Stadler (1): views of the Tuileries, the Louvre, the Pont Saint-Michel, the Pont Neuf, the Hôtel de la Monoie (sic), the Pont au Change, the Porte Saint-Denis, Notre-Dame, the Panthéon, the Pont de Sèvres, etc., captured from an original and unusual angle, notably at water level for the banks of the Seine.
A copy of the second state, printed in aquatint. The first state had been printed in soft varnish. The volume is thought to have had a half-title, which is missing here (as is often the case). Waterstains and faint water marks. (Abbey, 102.)
