LÉAUTTÉ (Marcel). Photographs taken from life during the Paris Commune, 18 March to 21 May 1871. [Paris], , [1871]. Large quarto (37 x 34 cm) album in green embossed percaline, with the title ‘Historical Photographs – Paris 1871””, clasps, containing [1] printed title page with the handwritten note “Album déposé” in the bottom right-hand corner, 14 photographic prints on albumen paper from collodion glass negatives, and [1] certificate of authenticity (“‘Only 200 albums similar to this one may be produced from the original plates’”), all mounted on heavy paper with tabs. Numerous pinholes. A rare album providing a valuable record of scenes from the Commune, including the interior of the Hôtel de Ville, which served as accommodation for the “Lascars” of the Compagnie de l’Etoile, the demolition of the statue of Henry IV, the launch of the first hot-air balloon bound for the provinces carrying the proclamation of the dying Commune, the Vendôme Column five minutes before its fall and immediately afterwards, the barricades on Avenue Victoria and Place de la Concorde, etc. (3 copies recorded in public collections by OCLC: 2 at the BnF, containing 22 and 13 prints respectively, and 1 at the Staatsbibliothek in Berlin).
