Description
PIGANIOL de LA FORCE (Jean-Aymar). A Historical Description of the City of Paris and its Surroundings. Paris, Desprez, 1765. 10 vols. in-12, marbled sheepskin, spine with decorated raised bands, red and green title and volume number labels (contemporary binding). Bindings worn, scuffed and with some skin loss, a few losses to the cap ends. Paper browned in a few places. 85 plates (out of 93) in intaglio engraving, by Scotin, Lucas, Hérisset and Aveline, most of them folded, depicting maps of the districts, streets, monuments, etc. The general map and 8 separate plates are missing. A posthumous edition, revised, corrected and expanded by Abbé Pérau. It is one of the earliest guides of its kind and the most comprehensive on Paris. It opens with a bibliographical overview, followed by a summary of the history of Paris, then a detailed description of the city’s 20 districts, complete with a list of streets. Volume IX describes the outskirts of Paris. Volume X is devoted to the general street directory and the indexes. (Cohen 800.)
