LE POIS (Nicolas). De Cognoscendis et curandis praecipue internis humani corporis morbis libri tres [...] Lugduni Batavorum [Leiden], Quirinum Visser, 1736. 2 parts in one substantial small quarto volume of [13] ff., 424–486–[64] pp. Marbled calf, decorated ribbed spine, title page in red marbling, red edges (contemporary binding). A fine engraved portrait of the author by Van der Meer, as a frontispiece, folded. Some scuffing. "Nicolas LE POIS (1527–1590) (Nicolaus Piso), father of Charles, and his brother Antoine, studied medicine in Paris, where they were taught by the famous Dubois, known as Sylvius. They came from a family in the Meuse region well known to the Dukes of Lorraine, in particular Duke Antoine, who helped these two young students by financing their studies. Nicolas served successively as physician to Duke François, then to Chrestienne, and subsequently as the regular physician to Claude of France, who suffered from progressive tuberculosis that would lead to her death at a relatively young age, though not before she had successfully carried to term eight pregnancies between the ages of 16 and 27, the last of which proved fatal in 1575. A renowned practitioner, he published a work entitled *De cognoscendis et curandis praecipue internis humani corporis morbi*. This book, printed in Frankfurt in 1580, was a great success.
