A General History of Medicinal Substances, dealing with plants, animals and minerals [...] Paris, Loyson & Pillon and Ducastin, 1694. 3 parts in one folio volume of [6] folios, 16 pp. and one engraved plate outside the text (“Very curious observations on various plants, animals, minerals and other subjects, which I forgot to include in the first edition, or which I have since discovered”), 304 pp. (+ 16 interleaved folios numbered from 233 i to xxxii 264); 108 pp.; 116 pp.; [19] folios (table of contents). Havana-coloured sheepskin, decorated ribbed spine (contemporary binding). Head and foot caps torn off, heavy wear to the leather, a few areas of leather missing from the edges and corners, binding worn. First edition. The illustrations consist of a frontispiece portrait of the author by Leclerc, a separate plate and 400 copper-engraved vignettes within the text. ""Pomet (Pierre), French apothecary and botanist, born and died in Paris (1658–1699). He travelled to England, Holland, Italy, etc., and opened an apothecary’s shop in Paris. He lectured at the Jardin des Plantes. […] A curious work, which served as a guide and handbook for herbalists and apothecaries of the 17th century.” Caillet, 306. (Pritzel, 7258).
