Description
[BÉRAIN (Jean)]
Ornaments designed by BÉRAIN. Paris, the author at the Louvre galleries, undated [c. 1711].
In folio: engraved title page and 15 plates.
Contemporary fawn calfskin, decorated ribbed spine, fleurs-de-lis between panels, fleurs-de-lis in the spandrels on the covers, scuffs and signs of wear, gilt roulette on the edges.
An extract from this superb collection of ornamental engravings (wall decorations, grotesques, vases and urns, capitals) after J. Berain, draughtsman, engraver and ornamentalist. Having studied under Ch. Le Brun, he was appointed draughtsman to Louis XIV in 1674 and official decorator to the Royal Academy of Music in 1680; his style revitalised the 16th-century ‘grotesque’ style and foreshadowed the Rococo movement that went on to influence the whole of Europe.
