Blue morocco leather by Canape and Corriez) – Copy on Japanese paper – Autograph letter by Doré [DORÉ (Gustave)] Catalogue of drawings, watercolours and prints by Gustave Doré exhibited in the salons of the Cercle de la Librairie (March 1885), with a biographical note by M. G. Duplessis. Paris, Cercle de la Librairie, undated. In-8; portrait engraved by Lalauze after Charles Duran. One of 20 copies on Japon paper (the only large-format paper). Two versions of the portrait (printed in black and sepia). Copy containing an original autograph letter by Gustave Doré (4 pages in 8vo format) and Gustave Doré’s obituary notice. Half blue morocco with braided corners, signed CANAPE and CORRIEZ; decorated ribbed spine with gilded frames featuring five braids between panels; publisher’s cover retained; gilt headband. A fine copy. First edition of this interesting bio-bibliographical work, published after the death of Gustave DORÉ to mark an exhibition held in March 1885, one month before the sale of his studio.
