BELLEYME (Pierre de)
Map of the Generality of Aquitaine dedicated to Monsieur de Néville, Intendant of the province. Signed, dated, (1787).
Folded, canvas-mounted map in square 8vo format. Dimensions: 132.5 x 153 cm.
In a contemporary red boiled-paper cardboard slipcase, with gilded lace edging the sides. Gilded title label on a black background.
An extremely rare map extending from the mouth of the Garonne, north of Bordeaux, to the Spanish border in the east, and as far as Toulouse in the west. The work of the geographer and engineer Pierre de Belleyme, it is based on his famous and detailed ‘Map of Guyenne’. This latter map had been commissioned to provide more detailed information than that contained in the ‘General Map of France’ directed by Cassini.
Provenance: A printed bookplate from the Mony library, featuring three silver besants (the de Gères family, originally from Fezensac in the Gers). Mony Castle is situated in Rions in the Gironde.
