Description
Autographs CÉLINE (Louis-Ferdinand) Autograph letter to his friend Paul Chambrillon, a theatre critic and food columnist, dated 1 May, quoting Marlowe, an English playwright and contemporary of Shakespeare, A4 sheet, one page written (7 lines). Signed LD (Louis-Ferdinand Céline Destouche). Sheet torn along the fold. Louis-Ferdinand Auguste Destouches, known as Céline, is one of the most widely translated and read French writers in the world, second only to Marcel Proust. His work, however, is the subject of fierce controversy due to his hateful anti-Semitism. His distinctive writing, realism and style have made him a highly significant writer, regarded as one of the greatest innovators of 20th-century literature; his marvellous novel *Journey to the End of the Night* (1932) was awarded the Prix Renaudot. Paul Chambrillon was, notably, editor-in-chief of *Théâtre Magazine*. In addition to his numerous contributions to journals over several decades, he published a number of books. His name remains most closely associated with Louis-Ferdinand Céline, on whom he is regarded as one of the leading authorities, and with his *Anthologie Céline*, a double CD accompanied by a booklet co-authored by him, Jean d’Ormesson and Albert Zbinden, which brings together the bulk of the recordings he made whilst the author of *Journey to the End of the Night* was still alive.
