Description
Carayon-bound morocco - Copy on Japanese paper CLARÉTIE (Jules) - [ZO (Henri)] La Cigarette. Illustrations by Henri ZO. Paris, Girard, 1906. In-8; 29 illustrations, both in the text and as plates, by Henri ZO, wood-engraved by GASPERINI, PISELLI and CIAVARI under the supervision of M. ROMAGNOL. A print run of 135 copies; one of 10 on antique Japanese paper with a set of woodblocks. Publisher’s signature on the colophon page. Tobacco-coloured morocco leather signed CARAYON, spine and covers decorated with mosaic-patterned red bands, mosaic fleurons in the spandrels, double gilt fillet on the edges, caramel-coloured moiré endpapers, gilt edges, slipcase. A Basque novel set against the backdrop of the Carlist War, illustrated by an excellent artist who was also Basque. The first edition was published in 1890, followed by a 1899 edition in the ‘Complete Works’ (Talvart & Place III 136).
