Description
RUSSELL-KILLOUGH (Henry Patrice Marie), Earl Two Weeks in the Pyrenees (from Luchon to San Sebastián). First French translation based on the original 1868 edition, by Yann Gouyon. Biarritz, Amis du Livre Pyrénéen, 2009. In-12; 2 illustrations in the text. Limited edition of 221 copies on Rivoli paper; this copy is one of the 25 marked with letters of the alphabet on 100 g vellum reserved for founding members (A). ½ red morocco in the Bradel style, plain spine, gilt title and fleur-de-lis, original red publisher’s cover retained. French translation of “A Forthnight in the Pyrenees” from 1868. This edition had two print runs: the first print run [printed in 2008], which contained serious errors, was destroyed and replaced by a corrected print run (the one we have) [printed in 2009]. Only 16 copies of the first print run remain in the collections of bibliophiles. Included are: MIEILLE (Paul): *Le Russell de la Jeunesse*. Selected Pages by Count Henry Russell, taken from *Souvenirs d’un Montagnard*, with an Introduction and Biographical Notes on Henry [sic] Beraldi and Dr Sabatier. Illustrations taken from the collections of G. Ledormeur, Pyrénées-Océan, Jové, etc. Tarbes, Lesbordes, 1930. Square 8vo; numerous photographic illustrations within the text. Printed in an edition of 425 copies; one of 100 on cream-coloured glossy paper, numbered and signed by the author (no. LXI). Autograph dedication to President Duffour of the Central Pyrenees section. Half brown calfskin binding of the period, gilt title on a ribbed spine that has faded slightly, with some light scuffing. Beraldi concludes in his preface: “This admirable writer is now becoming a French classic: he is the Russell of the Schools, the Russell of Youth”. When will we see a proper edition aimed at our students, who will surely take a greater interest in this excellent literature—which has not aged a jot—than in certain authors so ‘classic’ that they are exasperatingly dull? The ‘Projet’ is rare.
