Description
Memoirs – Empire – Louisiana – Martinique – French Guiana – Empire LAUSSAT (Pierre Clément de), Baron Memoirs of My Life, to My Son, covering the years 1803 and thereafter, during which I held public office, namely: in Louisiana, as Commissioner of the French Government for the Recovery of Possession of that Colony and for its Handover to the United States; In Martinique, as Colonial Prefect; In French Guiana, in the capacity of Commander and Administrator for the King. Pau, Vignancour, 1831 (Serres-Castet, Édition du Gave, 2001). 3 parts, in-8. An extremely fine facsimile. Printed in a run of 500 copies (only 130 copies were put into circulation; the remainder were destroyed). Half brown calfskin with corners marked ‘DURAND’, ribbed spine, gilt headbands and volume numbers, blind-stamped, burgundy title labels, gilt head, original caramel-coloured publisher’s covers preserved. The only French reprint, expanded to include a bio-bibliography. The first edition of 1803 is exceedingly rare; the Pau Library holds one copy, as do the Archives of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques. Two copies have recently come up for sale at the start of this century, but these were certainly the first to appear on the market for decades. (Soulice 305)(Lacaze 192)
