Description
Moroccan leather signed ‘Champs’ LABAT (Gustave) Gustave de GALARD, His Life and Work (1779–1841) (followed by) Gustave de Galard, His Life and Work (1779–1841). Supplement. Bordeaux, Féret; Paris, Libraires Associés, 1896 / Ibid., 1898. Two works in one quarto volume; illustrated with 6 plates; 2 plates for the supplement. Limited edition of 240 copies and 200 for the supplement (one of 20 on Holland paper). ½ midnight blue morocco with corners signed CHAMPS, gilt title on ribbed spine, publisher’s covers preserved, gilt head. A fine copy. An interesting and rare bibliographic and iconographic study of the great artist Philippe Gustave, Count of Galard, born in the Gers in 1779, who (alongside Goya!) popularised lithography in Bordeaux, where he settled at the end of the Revolution. His albums, some of which are extremely rare, bear witness to a Bordeaux that Féret had already declared to have disappeared by the end of the 19th century (Labadie 908 and 927).
