Description
[VAUDREUIL (Pierre Louis de RIGAUD, Count of)]
Journeys from Paris to Bagnères-de-Luchon, via the Île-de-France, the Orléanais, the Berry, the Bourbonnais, the Auvergne, the Rouergue, the Albigeois, the Languedoc, the Roussillon and the eastern part of the Pyrenees; by Count P. de V. (followed by) A Journey from Bagnères-de-Luchon to Paris, via the western part of the Pyrenees, Gascony, Languedoc, Guienne, Saintonge, Poitou, Brittany and Normandy. Part One – from Luchon to Saintes. Part Two – from Saintes to Paris. By Count P. de V. Paris, Egron, 1820–1821.
3 parts in 3 in-8 volumes. Private library stamp.
Contemporary half-green shagreen, spine with decorative faux raised bands, gilt initials ‘A. D.’ on upper covers, some scuffing and normal wear.
It was in 1819 that the Count de VAUDREUIL set out on foot from Paris to reach Luchon. His entire luggage consisted of ‘a percale shirt, a pair of woollen socks, a large umbrella and a small wallet’. The journey took him nearly two months, during which he jotted down his impressions here and there in the form of letters to his brother-in-law. The return journey via Saintonge, Brittany and Normandy took much longer: five months. The section covering the Pyrenees appears in Volume 1, pp. 198–286 (Perpignan to Luchon), and in Volume 2, pp. 1–140 (Luchon to Auch via the Basque Country). A rare set comprising all three parts in uniform bindings.
Included is: [JOUDOU (Jean Baptiste Marie)]: Guide for Travellers to Bagnères-de-Bigorre and the Surrounding Area. Tarbes, the author, 1818.
In-8. Contemporary fawn half-basane, smooth spine with decoration, red title label and gilt scrolls, marbled edges.
A rare first edition, reprinted with illustrations the following year in 12mo. This is the first and most important work devoted to Bagnères during the Romantic era, when it was Europe’s leading spa resort.
JOUDOU was a bookseller in Tarbes. He also published this ‘guide’ through his own publishing house. By contrast, the subsequent edition of 1819 was published in Paris by Lerouge. His subsequent works were published by Aubanel, and Joudou must therefore have been living in the Vaucluse at the time, where he wrote at least three works on Avignon and its history, the popes in Avignon, and so on. Older biographies say nothing about this figure.
