Description
Ariège – Pyrenees
[DORIS (Charles)]
The Life and Pitiful End of Madame de Budoy, found in January 1814, completely naked and still alive, in the high mountains of the canton of Vic-Dessos..., in the department of Ariège. Paris; Brussels, Mathiot, 1817.
2 tomes in 2 volumes, in-12; 2 frontispieces (one of which features bears).
½ contemporary black calfskin, smooth spines, long romantic metal stamps, gilt headbands, slight scuffing from handling. A fine copy.
First edition of this very rare work, according to Labarère and Dendaletche.
It features curious frontispieces engraved by G. TEXIER, depicting a naked woman in a mountain landscape living amongst bears. This exceedingly rare work tells the story of a ‘wild woman’, a young woman found naked in the high mountains of the canton of Vic-Dessos, who is said to have lost her memory following a violent trauma and to have lived for several months amongst the bears in this region of the Pyrenees (Labarère 301).
