Description
[RAMOND de Carbonnières (Louis François Elisabeth), Baron]
The War of Alsace during the Great Western Schism, ending with the Death of the Valiant Count Hugues, nicknamed ‘The Soldier of Saint Peter’ – A Historical Drama. Basel, Thurneisen (using typefaces by G. Haas), 1780.
In-8; frontispiece engraved by HOHR, title vignette.
Hardcover in vellum, with a red title label on the spine.
First edition. Very rare and highly sought-after. BERALDI (a former Pyreneanist) claimed to know of only four copies (three in public libraries, one in a private Pyreneanist library).
Also included from the same author: *Les dernières aventures du jeune d’Olban* (a fragment from *Les amours alsaciennes*), preceded by a note by Mr Charles Nodier. New edition. Paris, Techener, 1829.
In-12. One of the very rare copies printed on Dutch paper (only 10 copies).
½ red morocco with filleted corners of the period, signed HARDY; decorated ribbed spine; gilt edges.
In the Dutch paper copies (such as this one), on the unnumbered page 1, beneath the dedication ‘To Mr Lenz’, there is a 16-line addition ending with the note: ‘These three words constitute the entire dedication in the ordinary copies. The following addition is taken from Mr Ramond’s autograph copy”. Only 10 copies are said to feature this particular detail.
This is an interesting edition due to the preface by Charles Nodier, who was passionate about the Romantic literary movement, of which he was both a key figure and one of the finest historians. Escoffier did not own either of the two editions of these extremely rare ‘Adventures’.
