Description
The Hunt PHOEBUS (Gaston III, Count of Foix, known as) The Hunt of Gaston PHOEBUS, Count of Foix, sent by him to Sir Philip of France, Duke of Burgundy, collated from a manuscript that belonged to John I of Foix, with notes and the life of Gaston PHOEBUS by Joseph LAVALLÉE. Paris, *Journal des Chasseurs*, 1854. In-8: LII, 280 pp., 2f. Small pinholes on the title page. A very rare copy on China paper, a title unknown to bibliographies, ½ brown shagreen with corners, title and hunting motif (gilded trunk stamp) on ribbed spine, gilt head. “An excellent edition that has become rare,” says Thiébaud. It was also through this edition that this treasure of hunting art was rediscovered. An edition had indeed been published shortly before, in 1844, by Dryden, but it was printed in only a very limited number of copies and was therefore not intended for the general public. Joseph Adrien Félix LAVALLÉE, Marquis de BOISROBERT, was the founder of the *Journal des Chasseurs* and the author of various works on hunting, including *La Chasse à Tir en France* in 1854 and *La Chasse à Courre en France*, published in 1856 (Thiébaud 732). Provenance: From the libraries of Richard Schwerdt, bearing his printed bookplate, and of the Count of Beaufort, bearing a bookplate with the motto ‘In Bello Fortis’.
