This title was first published in 1765. Jean and Jérôme, old friends and travelling musicians, fall out. The brawl, which stirs up the whole of Arras, turns to tragedy: Jérôme, whilst in hospital, is castrated by a vicious dog. From then on, a miraculous candle emerges from the victim’s brain and then appears over Arras, held aloft by the hands of Mary. This candle has the power to heal anyone suffering from carnal excesses.
