Quarto. Full contemporary binding in marbled sheepskin, worn. Smooth spine, decorated with gilt metalwork and fleurons. Losses at the foot and crown. Broken but sturdy clasps. The title label, on red morocco, reads: ‘Œuvres de M. L’Archevêque de Toulouse’. - A 38-page manuscript, unnumbered. A religious homily. - A 52-page manuscript, numbered: ‘The Prince and the Pontiff shall each sit upon a throne, and between them there shall be a council of peace’. 5 blank pages - Funeral oration for His Grace Louis, Dauphin, delivered in the Cathedral of Paris on 1 March 1766 by Sir Etienne Charles de Lomenie de Brienne, Archbishop of Toulouse [Printed text], 48 pages. - Handwritten extract from the correspondence of Monseigneur Lomenie de Brienne: - To the Archbishop of Narbonne – Request for a letter of recommendation, in connection with an administrative matter - To the Count of Eu – Congratulations on his military successes. - To the Count of Saint Florentin: Thanks for his interventions. - To the King: Thanks for the abolition of borders and tolls between the provinces and encouragement to continue this endeavour. - To the Queen: - To the Dauphin: That, in his benevolence, he may respect the wishes [and decisions] of the provincial parliaments. - To the Dauphine: - To the Duke of Berry [the future Louis XVI]: Wishes that he may learn to govern France, his future kingdom, well. - To the children of France: You shall govern France; be examples to all. - To the Princesses [daughters of King Louis XV]: “Take heed of the lessons of wisdom and virtue and grow up in obedience (...) and you shall be the delight of the people, the adornment of the Court and the glory of the Nation.” - To Madame Adélaïde [eldest daughter of Louis XV]: “Please accept, Madame, the assurance of our affection and respect. However high you may stand above the people, you cannot disdain their tributes. We all recognise their value, knowing how fully you deserve them.” - To Their Ladyships [daughters of King Louis XV]: “Rejoice, Ladies, in the happy lot that is the reward of virtue. France cannot bear witness to this without sharing in it; everything that concerns you is dear to her. Please accept these wishes, dictated by respect and the most unwavering devotion”. - To the Vice-Chancellor [Maupeou]: A petition for liberal intervention in favour of Languedoc. - To the Comptroller-General: “The spirit of order and justice that seems to govern all your operations assures us of the success of our requests. You have restored the land’s fertility by promoting the export of its riches; you will restore industry’s vigour by freeing it from the duties that weigh it down... This collection of documents by Cardinal Brienne de Loménie does not appear to have been handwritten by him.
