Froissart’s Chronicles cover the years 1322 to 1400 and describe the events of the first half of the Hundred Years’ War. Having been received at the courts of princes and kings in France, England and Scotland, the author was able to gather numerous accounts and record them, which lends his work such precision. He drew upon the *Histoires* by the chronicler Jean Lebel and generally followed its structure. Jean Froissart’s Chronicles are an essential source for understanding the 14th century and the history of the Hundred Years’ War. They constitute the principal expression of the chivalric culture of England and France in the 14th century. Froissart’s work is regarded as vitally important for understanding 14th-century Europe, particularly the Hundred Years’ War. However, modern historians also recognise numerous limitations in the Chronicles as a historical source.
