In-12°. Full contemporary binding in fawn sheepskin. Ribbed spine, decorated with gilt metalwork and fleurons. A small loss to the cap. 16 unnumbered pages, 679 pages, including the tables and the privilege. Title page printed in two colours, red and black.
The first original edition of *Caractères* was published in 1688; two further editions followed, identical to the first. This seventh edition, which may be regarded as the fifth original edition, contains numerous additions.
Editions from the fourth edition of 1689 onwards would contain a great many additions; for instance, the fourth (the first edition to have been completed) contains 764 notes compared with 420 in the first, whilst the seventh edition we are presenting here contains 1,073, compared with the original 420.
