[LITERATURE] LA MONNOYE (Bernard): New Poems by M. de La Monnoye. No place, no date [1743] The edition of the poems was published in 1714. Pages in double borders. Full contemporary binding in speckled sheepskin, somewhat worn. Ribbed spine decorated with metal tools on cloth. Tears with losses at the top corners. ‘Ex dono’ on the title page. A critic and philologist (he edited and worked on numerous important texts, and his editions are still sought after), the distinguished man of letters Bernard de la Monnoye (1641–1728) was the first to win the poetry prize at the Académie française. He was ruined by Law’s financial scheme in 1720. The preface (Printer’s Notice) recounts all the misfortunes that befell him right up to the advanced age of 88.
