Description
[LITERATURE] LA MOTHE LE VAYER, François de; Hexaméron rustique, or The Six Days Spent in the Countryside amongst Learned People. Cologne, Pierre Brenussen, 1671. In-12°. Contemporary full binding in fawn sheepskin. Upper cap worn away. Small tear at the foot. On the first endpaper, an ex libris belonging to Jean Godefroy de La Trémoille (1737–1792), President of the Nobility of Brittany. Edition published in Cologne by Pierre Brenussen one year after the first. “An ambiguous philosopher, La Mothe Le Vayer remains a bawdy philosopher, and the rustic *Hexaméron*, which is his latest transgression, is by no means the most innocuous. "" The work, indeed, “revives youthful bawdy humour, wallows in obscenity and mockery… and the wildest of the young magistrate’s fantasies—a reminiscence of his debauchery of mind and body—the commentary on *L’Antre des Nymphes*, finds its place there (Pintard, *Le Libertinage érudit*, I, pp. 431 and 536).""
