MARIVAUX:
Complete Works.
Paris. Veuve Duichesne, 1781.
12 volumes in 8°. Marbled calfskin, spine with 5 raised bands decorated with metal fittings, fleurons and gilt fillets. Gilded fillet frames on the covers. Marbled edges. Contemporary binding.
First collected edition, featuring a portrait of the author, engraved by Saint Aubin.
The only early edition bringing together his plays and narrative works.
As Tchemerzine notes (VII, 437–438), the 1825–1830 edition is less comprehensive; a single other text by Marivaux not included in this edition was published as a supplement in 1922: *La Provinciale*; furthermore, the 1825 edition does not reproduce all the works contained in the 12th volume. This edition brings together rare works of fiction: Les Effets surprenants de la sympathie, Le Spectateur françois, L’Indigent philosophe, Le Cabinet du philosophe, Homère travesti, Le Don Quichotte moderne, L’Éducation d’un prince, Le Miroir, La Voiture embourbée, Le Télémaque travesti.
The edition comprises 51 of the author’s texts, including his complete works for the theatre.
Complete set. In good condition, despite some minor signs of wear.
